The priority when a suspended person is injured or unconscious, is to remove him or her from the system.
The aim is to place the victim in a zone where medical assistance can be administered.
Before any intervention, the team must carry out a risk assessment. A plan of rescue is the result of this assessment.
This plan must provide for action with maximum safety, in the minimum amount of time possible.
The techniques for disengagement draw on methods used for lifting and descent.
The techniques frequently lead the worker to intervene using personal equipment, and to manage the descent of two persons using one descender. They require a complete mastery of the equipment.
Note: all systems must have a back-up safety system and be double-checkedbefore use.
In a team of workers, every member of the team must be capable of carrying out such maneuvers. The victim cannot wait for the arrival of specialized rescue teams.
This race against time must not expose the rescuers to unnecessary danger. The rescue must be carried out calmly and in an organized fashion.
To achieve this, training and regular practice are indispensable.
Accompanied descent
Rescue using a prepared kit. This simple technique allows the rescuer to remain free so that he/she can control the descent of the victim. The injured person must be lowered vertically with no obstacles blocking the descent.
