Context
In areas difficult access, it is often impossible to install or use collective systems for protection. This is the case, for example, with overhanging structure, and projects where neither an access platform nor a scaffold can be used. This is also the case for any short duration access, such as for inspection. The use of PPE is a necessity.

Techniques
Rope access workers use:

• access techniques developed from methods used in caving, climbing or artificial (aid) climbing
• sophisticated work positioning techniques for balance and protection

A second safety rope allows the rope access worker to be backed-up.
